"Voyages of New Netherland"
 

Tuesday, November 17, @5pm

Join NNI and the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society for the launch of the new online database, “Voyages of New Netherland,” a searchable, primary source-based directory of more than 300 ship voyages to New Netherland (1609–1664).  
 
The session will feature an introduction by the project developer, Julie van den Hout, followed by a discussion with Charles Gehring of the New Netherland Research Center and Stephen McErleane of the New Netherland Institute. Learn how the database will aid future research on New Netherland and also how viewing New Netherland through the stories of these ships adds a new dimension to our understanding of the colony. A live Q & A with the audience will follow the pre-recorded presentation and conversation.  

This live event is free and open to the public.

This project was funded by a Charles W. Wendell Research Grant from the New Netherland Institute.

"New Discoveries, New Amsterdam"
 

Join NNI Senior Historian, Dennis Maika, for a talk (this is a talk, despite the misleading description) on race and slavery in New Amsterdam. Maika will take a close look at decisions made within the unique historical context of seventeenth-century Manhattan in order to speculate about the motive and mindset of merchants and enslavers.

Behind the scenes tour of the NYS Museum's New Netherland Collections

Monday, November 2, @ noon

New Netherland Research Center Director Dr. Charles Gehring will provide an overview of his work in the translation of Dutch documents, research, and collaborations at the NYS Museum and beyond. 

State Museum Historic Archeologist Dr. Michael Lucas will give a tour in the museum collections area of New Netherland related artifacts from sites in New York State.

Museum Chief Curator Dr. Jennifer Lemak will tour New Netherland related, and Hudson Valley Dutch Decorative arts in the Museum Collection areas.

"Creating a Dutch Colonial Heritage Hudson Valley Tourism Experience" with Russell Shorto

Tuesday, November 10, @ 1pm

Russell Shorto’s June 2019 New York Times article “In the Hudson Valley: A Drive Back in Time” renewed public tourism interest in Dutch colonial history.

New York’s Dutch roots give the state’s history a unique grounding, and they offer historic sites an opportunity with great potential for tourism and economic development. Mr. Shorto and tourism industry partners will join the Museum Association of New York (MANY) in brainstorming ideas on how historic sites can create new tourism experiences centered around Dutch Colonial history.
