As many of you know, Dr. Janny Venema is retiring (any day now) after 30 + years of working for the New Netherland Project and its successor the New Netherland Research Center. I won't list Janny's many accomplishments in the field of New Netherland studies; you can find those elsewhere. I will, however, offer a few reflections on my time working with Janny. I first met Janny 8 or so years ago. It took a few meetings for her to remember me and a few more for her to be convinced that I am actually tall (I'm 6'7"). Like many people, the first thing I thought when I heard Janny's name was Yanny, the Greek musician. But that associaion faded quickly when it became clear that there is only one Janny Venema. The bulk of our conversations took place in her corner of the "hidden" 8th floor at the New York State Library, a floor (which still looks as it does in the photo above) that Russell Shorto brought international recognition in Island at the Center of the World. I would sit in one of those brightly-colored cushioned chairs that seem original to the building and, in their gaudiness, reflective of the period in which it opened. Janny would sit in her office chair. We discussed various topics like her childhood in the Netherlands, hiking in the Adirondacks, her mechanic in Averill Park, what to make for breakfast, the early days of the NNP, Schodack Town Park, and of course the New Netherland documents. My contact with Janny increased when I worked with her and Charly on the publication of Volume 8 and even more so when she and I worked on Volume 13, which will be out shortly. I'm meticulous to a fault, and I thank Janny for her patience! Anyway, everyone at NNI wishes Janny the best in her retirement. If you know Janny, you know that she is thoroughly Dutch. But she is also throughly an upstate New Yorker. Image from right to left: Charles Gehring, Martha Shattuck, Janny Venema, and, forgive me, someone I don't know. We will share her identity in the June newsletter. |
